James Avery

Executive Director

James Avery was born in Flint, Michigan and attended Bunch Elementary School. When he was 10 his family moved to Grand Blanc where he graduated from High School. He played football and studied at Western Michigan University, and also pursed his education at Mott Community College, Baker College and the University of Michigan. His academic focus, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, has always been with a concentration in education.

Mr. Avery’s experience includes work in the fields of retail, automotive and education. He taught at the Genesee Area Skill Center (now GCI) and Flint Southwestern Academy. Following that he worked in administration at the Genesee Intermediate School District. Prior to his role at Berston Field House, he served for 8 years as the Director of Talent Development at the Flint and Genesee Group.

Community service has always been important to James. For 11 years he served as a school board member of the Grand Blanc Community School District, including five years as Board President. In addition, he also served on the Board of the Genesee Intermediate School District.
